It has been quite a while since I last wrote on my very own column! A lot has happened since my pet photography article... and that includes the Orlando shooting. Social media is alive with the trending hashtags (i.e. #PrayforOrlando), instant news updates, heated political debates, and the boldly claiming profile overlays, 'We Are Orlando'. What is meant to be a time of prayer, mourning, and aide for Orlando and our country has turned into a huge heated debate of people's 'rights'. In the midst of all this ugliness, however, there is one news headline that sparks hope, encouragement, and reassurance. As CNN headlines put it, 'They are canine ambassadors of kindness, helping the emotionally vulnerable in Orlando.' God has used the Lutheran Church Charities (LCC) K-9 Comfort Dogs organization in amazing ways throughout many catastrophes (including the Boston Marathon bombing), and now they step up to comfort those in Orlando. The mission statement on their website reads: 'LCC works throughout the United States and internationally in bringing the Mercy, Compassion, Presence, and Proclamation of Jesus Christ to those suffering and in need.' I absolutely love this organization's heart! In my opinion, they have had just about the best active response (aside from the prayers of you and me) to this crisis. Currently, one of my favorite quotes comes from Evangelist Billy Graham: 'It is the Holy Spirit's job to convict, God's job to judge, and my job to love.' This quote matches up perfectly to the actions of the Comfort Dog handlers. One aspect of this organization that is truly amazing is the fact that before going out for their day of hard work and ministry, they gather around in one big group (the dogs are of course included!) to pray and have morning devotions. They truly have servant hearts, seeking to better serve God's kingdom on earth. And guess what? these dogs are indeed bringing comfort to those hurting this very minute! Their handlers have the awesome opportunity to witness to these hurting people and show them the love of Christ. And what could be better then serving God alongside man's best friend?! As we continue to pray for Orlando, let's also include the Comfort Dogs and their handlers...that their impact will be huge on those they reach and for the Kingdom of God and His church.
